Systems Engineering

Systems engineering includes the analysis, implementation, and optimisation of complex energy systems, as well as the integration of technical solutions.

Therein, system analysis serves to evaluate current states and to develop technical variants and future scenarios under ecological and economic aspects. Based on efficient, innovative, and sustainable concepts, potential for optimisation is identified and technical solutions are developed. Finally, in the context of system integration, innovative technologies and components are incorporated and dimensioned.

During all phases of such projects, ZAE provides extensive scientific support: from conception to planning and construction to operational optimisation and success monitoring. Potential use cases include system studies, climate protection concepts, energy supply systems, technical processes, as well as energy-efficient buildings, neighbourhoods and industrial sites.

Our work focuses on:

  • Assessment and simulation of systems in feasibility studies
  • Assistance in the implementation of municipal and national climate conservation goals
  • Energy supply for municipalities
  • Supply of district heating from deep geothermal energy and biomass
  • Innovative and renewable energy concepts for districts and industrial sites
  • Innovative buildings, new construction and refurbishment
  • Monitoring of plants and buildings (analysis, operational optimisation, success monitoring)

Scientific Monitoring of Municipal Heat Supply Systems Using Deep Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Station

ZAE Bayern has been entrusted with providing scientific and technical support for various municipal district heating projects using deep geothermal energy. The spectrum of responsibilities ranges from feasibility studies and concept development during the planning phase to the evaluation of operational plants, optimisation proposals, as well as the concrete implementation of and success monitoring for optimisation measures. The scope of analyses and evaluations ranges from single components to overall projects and systems, always aiming to achieve an efficient ecological and economical overall concept. This also includes medium- to long-term project planning or the comparison of technical variants for a potential future expansion of an energy hub or district heating network. The toolkit used includes application-specific calculation tools.

ReWaMem –
Recycling of Laundry Sewage via Ceramic Nanofiltration

Federal Ministry of Education and Research

ReWaMem is a joint project with partners such as Kompetenznetzwerk Wasser und Energie e. V. (coordinator) and Fraunhofer IKTS. The objective of the project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is the reduction of fresh water demand in textile laundries through the targeted treatment and reuse of waste water. The project is being exemplarily implemented at a laundry near Coburg. The treatment problem is to be solved with ceramic membrane carriers and membranes to be developed in multi-channel pipe geometries or, as a development alternative, with rotating disk filters, in each case with a nanofiltration coating. Based on the options for saving energy and water, ZAE Bayern is advancing a tool that will allow textile laundries to examine their process chains more specifically in order to identify potential for the reuse of wastewater within their company. ZAE Bayern's work package includes the development of benchmarks for washing processes, with particular regard to energy and resource requirements, and making them available as a web-based online tool.

10,000 Houses Programme

10,000 Houses

The 10,000 houses programme is intended to support property developers in accounting for future energetic requirements when newly constructing or refurbishing buildings, and to cover the remaining energy demand in a manner as environmentally compatible and supportive of the energy system as possible. ZAE Bayern has been assigned to provide technical and scientific support for the conception and implementation of the funding programme. Project work is carried out in close cooperation with the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. ZAE's tasks encompass technical support for the development of new, sensible funding modules, as well as for the amendment of existing funding schemes, the ongoing administration of the programme, but also the assessment of new and so far hardly used technologies from the areas of heating systems, storage technologies, or renewable energies, regarding their eligibility for funding. This specifically applies to questions about particularly innovative technologies in development.
